Vaccination Requirements in New York State

Effective June 13, 2019, Public Health Law § 2164 was amended to eliminate the religious exemption from vaccinations for children whose “parent, parents, or guardian hold genuine and sincere religious beliefs” that are contrary to the practice of vaccination. Pursuant to the newly amended law, every person in “parental relation” to a child in this state must ensure that such child receives adequate doses of immunizing agents against various diseases in order to gain admission to “any public, private or parochial child caring center, day nursery, day care agency, nursery school, kindergarten, elementary, intermediate or secondary school,” unless “any physician licensed to practice medicine in this state certifies that such immunization may be detrimental to a child's health . . .”
